convert your apartment to an edible oasis

Does the idea of turning your home into a food production zone excite you? Come and work together with Sophia van Ruth of Urban Edibles to generate a realistic and inspiring plan for your own ‘edible home’. Over two evenings we will consider not only your outdoor spaces, but also windowsills and other opportunities such as hanging and wall mounted plants. You will further learn about succession planting and winter crops and go home with a year round strategy. This program is specifically for people without a garden and provides specialised information on growing in pots. Within a few months you can be eating right from your own doorstep!

Sophia is experienced in participatory design and planning, having worked in this field for 10 years in Australia. She has developed a methodology and set of tools specifically for these evenings to facilitate your design process. Each intake is limited to four participants only, so you can be sure that you will receive all the attention you need.

what you learn:

  • which plants will best suit your lifestyle and personality
  • which pot sizes are appropriate for the plants you want to grow
  • which plants must you grow indoors and which outdoors
  • basics of companion planting, crop rotation and succession planting
  • how to balance annual and perennial plantings for your situation and lifestyle
  • solutions for shady balconies and windy rooftops where needed (if you have a very dark space please contact Sophia to check if this workshop is suited to you)

what you take home:

  • a scale plan of the layout of your edible plants for different times of the year
  • a set of tools you can use if you even need or want to redesign your plantings
  • the urban edibles guide to growing from seed
  • list of resources to help you with the ongoing fine tuning

about your facilitator sophia van ruth:

  • degree in interior design from the university of south australia
  • long history of growing food in her city homes
  • permaculture and forest garden design influences
  • author of the urban edibles e-book series on urban farming
