So you can give them the best possible start in life we’d like to offer our tips on avoiding one of the more deadly hazards to baby plants. It is called ‘damping off’ and it is caused by a fungal infestation. It can be devastating to your seedlings – they literally just keel over and die.
The good news is that there are some easy steps you can follow to help protect your tiny plants.
Preventing Damping Off
1. don’t overwater
Fungal species like damp conditions, let the soil dry a little on the surface before you water again.
2. use a good substrate
You can buy soil mixes specifically designed for growing seeds in – many of these have been steralised to kill off any fungal and bacterial species. This can be handy for baby plants, but a healthy mix of microbiology is essential to plant health in the long run – remember to add a good compost when you transplant.
3. give your babies some breathing room
Don’t plant your seedlings too close together. This can create the kind of moist dark conditions where fungus thrives!
